Mary Payne - Granny Clayton's cousin

.
Mary Helen Finn (Granny Clayton) had a first cousin named Mary Payne, who lived with her family at Albert Street in Aston. Kathleen Robinson recalled that Granny Clayton referred to her cousin as Mary Jane Payne. This person was in fact the same first cousin that I referred to some pages earlier, Mary Ann Finn, whose father James was the older brother of Granny Clayton’s father, Thomas Finn.

The two brothers lived very close to each other in the Newtown area for at least twenty years. Both men are recorded living in the same close proximity in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses. The first recording of Mary Ann Finn was as a 9 year old child living with her family in Lench Street in 1881.

Whilst I have not been able to locate a record for James Finn’s family in the 1891 census, when Thomas’s family were in Hospital Street (Mary Ann Finn would have been 19 in 1891), there is a record for James Finn living with the Payne family at 27 Pritchett Street in the 1901 census.

The 1901 census records 60 year old James Finn, a brick layers labourer from Ireland, living in the home of his son in law, Frederick Payne at 27 Pritchett Street, North Birmingham. Frederick Payne was a 30 year old glass cutter from Coventry. His wife Mary J Payne was a 30 year old grocers shop keeper from Birmingham whose employment status was described as ‘own account working from home’. Also in the Payne family home were 2 year old Florence and 8 month old Lizzie.

Also recorded in the 1901 census is a Thomas Finn, aged 34, who is a brass polisher living in Aston. I believe that this could be one of Mary Payne’s brothers who was recorded as a 14 year old polisher in the 1881 census. There is also a 27 year old James Finn, French polisher, living in Birmingham, who could have been another of Mary’s brothers.
