My g-g-grandfather Richard Phelan in Griffiths Valuation

If your Irish ancestors had land during the mid-19th century, even a field they leased off someone else, it is worth a search of Griffith's Valuation. Locating an ancestor to a specific farm can be the key to finding baptism, marriage and funeral records in the local parish - which are generally now held by the local and family history centres in the counties.

Just to demonstrate how useful the Griffths Valuaton is I searched for my great-great grandfather Richard Phelan who farmed an area at Ashtown in Kilkenny and found what I think is a reference to him and a map showing his land. You just cross reference the number on the schedule with the numbers on the map, Richard Phelan is number 9.
